As well as celebrating the school, they will also pay tribute to President Gordon Moulton, whose career spans most of that period. He has overseen the phenomenal growth of the university during his 15 years as president.
The celebration will begin at 6:30pm at The Mitchell Center and will feature food and music. They will also have memories of the University’s early ears, recognition of faculty and their teaching, research, scholarly activity and creative works. They will also have a video presentation of USA’s first half-century.

The event is free and open to the public. The dress is business casual.
When USA was established there was no other public, four-year degree granting institution in the region. Civic and business leaders recognized the importance of a university to the region’s success and pushed for it’s creation.
The single-building campus in west Mobile quickly expanded, established a medical school and is recognized today as a vibrant, competitive teaching and research institution.
Over it’s 50 years it has awarded 75,000 degrees; 15,000 currently enrolled students; 250,000 patients treated annually; 5,500 employees; $400 million in annual payroll, one of the area’s largest; $2 billion in economic impact each year.
Gordon Moulton arrived at the University when it was only three years old as he joined the business faculty in 1966. He has served as director of the USA computer center, founding dean of the School of Computer and Information Sciences (now named the School of Computing) and vice president for services and planning.
Then, most notably, he was selected as the University’s second president in 1998.
He led the development of the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute, the largest research endeavor in the school’s history. The USA Health System which consists of the USA College of Medicine, physician practice, USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital, the USA Medical Center.
He also led the creation of the USA Research and Technology Park which is now home to 16 technology based firms and 600 private sector employees.
He has also led the construction of multiple new facilities on campus including Shelby Hall, Meisler Hall, a new Student Center, and the Football Fieldhouse when the University began a NCAA football program and marching band program.

Demetre Baker Dismissed From Team
Running back Demetre Baker is asking for his release from South Alabama according to his Social Media accounts and WNSP.
Coach Jones told WNSP that Baker had over 20 rules infractions against team rules. He missed games last season due to breaking team rules as well. Jones also said that, after a meeting and a vote of the seniors on the team, they voted to kick him off the football team.
Baker has taken to Social Media and said that all he wants is his transfer papers, but that post has since been taken down.
He participated in spring drills and practices after being named ineligible after failing two classes in the fall. According to Baker’s interview with SunBeltInsider.com, he has been banned from “…offices and campus facilities” which I assume means sports offices and facilities and not academic facilities.
When more information comes out about this situation, we will cover it. But as of now, all we know is that Baker has been dismissed from the team and is looking to get his release to transfer to another school.
NCAA Football ’14 Preview Now With More Jaguars
We covered the controversy last year when EA Sports failed to include South Alabama in the 2013 edition of their yearly NCAA Football franchise. Many Jaguar fans were annoyed and mad about being overlooked and they took to social media and email to let EA know about their displeasure.
EA responded with an initial, “oops, sorry we’ll get you next time.” But that was not enough for the fans. They continued to contact EA and they finally relented and gave the school their “first class treatment.”
Last season EA sent a crew to do detailed stadium scans, fan and tailgating photos and audio recordings to be included in the 2014 edition. They spent the week leading up to the game to collect data on the stadium and information about the team’s playbook. They also experienced gameday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium and have been using it to digitially recreate it “in the game,” as they say. This oversight may have worked out in South Alabama’s favor after all.
This was posted by EA Sports on their website previewing the 2014 game. “This year, South Alabama makes its long-awaited debut in NCAA Football along with Old Dominion and Georgia State. The Jaguars stadium has been accurately recreated, as has Texas State’s. That’s right, Jim Wacker Field at Bobcat Stadium will be in the game. Both big and small schools received attention, with TCU’s stadium updated to reflect their recent renovations. Horned Frogs fans should feel right at home.”
