South Alabama’s Men’s Golf team will open play at the NCAA Southeast Regional hosted by LSU on Thursday. It will be the first of three rounds of play beginning at 8am. This is the program’s first-ever at-large bid.

The University Club is a 7,436 yard par 72 course. The Jags will play 54 holes over three days with the top five teams and the leading individual not from one of the teams advancing to the NCAA Championships that will begin on May 28.

The second-ranked Alabama is the top seed in the regional with #10 Florida, 17th ranked LSU, #23 Mississippi State and Houston are the top five seeds in the regional. Also competing, in order by seeding, are: Northwestern, Tennessee, USA, Coastal Carolina, UAB, Wichita State, Southeastern Louisiana and Houston Baptist.

The Jags will tee off at 8:50 am and will be playing with Tennessee and Coastal Carolina.

The South Alabama Men’s Golf team earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Regional. The Jags have participated in the NCAA Regional on six occasions prior to the the 2012-’13 season. However the at-large bid is the first in the programs history.

They will particpate in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional as a #8 seed in a field of 13 teams and 10 individuals. The top five schools and the highest finishing individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships which will be held in ALpharetta, Georgia at the Capital City Club Crabapple Course from May 28 through June 2.

Teams also participating in the Baton Rouge Regional include in order of seeding: Alabama, Florida, LSU (the host), Mississippi State, Houston, Northwestern, Tennessee, South Alabama, Coastal Carolina, UAB, Wichita State, Southeastern Louisiana and Houston Baptist.

The regional will be held on May 16 with 18 holes scheduled for three consecutive days.

Jaguar Golf Honored By Coaches Association

The Jaguar golf team is honored, for the fourth straight year, by the Golf Coaches Association of America by being named an All-Academic Team. In order to be eligible for this honor, each player on the team must carry a minimum 3.0 GPA for the academic year. The school must submit the grade points earned and the hours attempted by each player on the official team list to be considered.

Last season 11 Jags had a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and four of them had a 3.5 or higher. As a team, they had a 3.35 GPA for the 2011-2012 season.

79 NCAA Division I schools were honored for the 2011-2012 season.

McLain Leberte was recognized by the GCAA as a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar as well. He will be a senior this coming season.
