South Alabama Sports – Weekend Preview

Baseball

The Jaguar baseball team will face Texas State for the first time on the baseball diamond this weekend starting tonight at 6:30pm in San Marcos, Texas.

The Jags are in the midst of a five game losing streak and carries a 13-15 record into the game. They lost midweek games against Southeastern Louisiana and Southern Mississippi. Though the Jaguars lead the conference in sacrifice bunts, they are last in the conference in hits, runs scored, RBI, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, total bases, doubles and home runs.

Texas State is 17-11 overall and 6-3 in conference play this season. They have won two of their last five games. They are batting .247 as a team with a staff ERA of 3.70.

Starting for the Jaguars in game one is Locke St. John (3-1). Kevin Hill (2-3) will start game two and the Jags have not announced a starter for the series finale on Sunday.

Texas State is currently third in the conference while the Jags are sitting eighth out of ten schools.

All of the games can be heard on 105.5FM WNSP or WNSP.com online. Saturday’s game will start at 3pm and Sunday will get underway at 1pm.

Softball

The Jaguar softball team will also be in San Marcos, Texas for a three game Sun Belt Conference series against the Bobcats.

They will play a double-header on Saturday with their first game set for 1pm and the second scheduled for 3pm. They will wrap up the series on Sunday beginning at 11am.

Texas State enters the game with a 19-19 record on the season and 2-4 in the conference. They have dropped their last four games.

The Jaguars sit on top of the conference standings with a 7-0 conference record and an overall record of 29-4. Right behind them is Louisiana-Lafayette with an overall record of 25-6-1 and a perfect 6-0 in conference play. Also WKU who has an overall record of 23-10-1 and a perfect 6-0 record in conference play.

Track and Field

The men’s and women’s track and field teams will make their first of two visits to Auburn, Alabama this season when they participate in the Tiger Classic on Friday and Saturday.

While only eight Jaguars traveled to Austin for the Texas Relays, the majority of individuals from both squads will be in action this weekend.

Friday will open with the men’s hammer throw at 2pm followed by the women’s hammer throw. Men’s and women’s javelin, triple jump and 5,000-meter run are also scheduled for Friday.

Events will resume at 11am on Saturday with running events starting at noon.

Football

While they held their annual spring game last Saturday, the Jaguars were going to have their final scrimmage on Saturday, but a sudden change of plans have the Jaguars holding their scrimmage on Friday morning.

Instead, on Saturday, the Jaguars will use their final practice of the spring session to go over some opponents for the upcoming season. On Saturday, they will be in helmets and shorts.

Their practice today will have a hour of situational drills pitting the offense against the defense. The second hour of the practice will be used to scrimmage. The majority of the time in the scrimmage will be used to play the third and fourth teams to give those players mor reps and more video time so they can be evaluated in game-type situations.

The Saturday practice will have the team working on understanding the tendencies of some of the opponents they will be facing next season. This season the Jaguars will face some new and some old opponents. They will visit Kent State again and will travel to South Carolina. They will host Mississippi State and Navy. Their Sun Belt Schedule includes newcomers Georgia Southern, Idaho, and Appalachian State as well as Georgia State, Troy, Louisiana-Lafayette, Arkansas State and Texas State.
