USABaseballThe Jaguar baseball team dropped their second game in as many days when they fell at home to Southern Miss 3-1 Wednesday evening.

With the Jaguars leading 1-0 in the top of the eighth, USM put two runners on base with no outs after a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt was mishandled by the pitcher Jared Gates. A bunt attempt to move both runners into scoring position resulted in the first baseman Cole Gleason’s throw sailing wide of first base to allow both runners to score for the Golden Eagles to take a 2-1 lead. A sacrifice fly to center would score the other runner for the 3-1 margin.

Gates (1-3) sufferred the loss after going seven innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits with a career-high seven strikeouts and a pair of walks.

The Jags will travel to San Marcos, Texas for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series against Texas State where they hope to break their five game losing skid.

Friday night’s game will get underway at 6:30pm, Saturday’s game is scheduled for 3pm and Sunday’s game is scheduled for 1pm. All of the games can be heard on 105.5 FM WNSP and WNSP.com.
