South Alabama quarterback Ross Metheny was named the Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Metheny, the 6’3″ 203-pound senior from Stephens City, Virginia, transferred to South Alabama from the University of Virginia. He was responsible for four of the Jaguars touchdowns in it’s 41-39 victory over Tulane in the Superdome in New Orleans on Saturday.

Metheny was the Jaguars’ leading rusher with 75 yards and two touchdowns while throwing for 290 yards onf 19-of-30 passing and two more touchdowns and two interceptions enroute to ending South Alabama’s seven game losing streak dating back to the 2012 season. He also set two game records and led the Jags to the highest yardage total against an FBS opponent.

Through two games Metheny ranks third in the conference in passing efficiency (157.38), third in total offense (239.5 yards per game), and fifth in passing yards per game (201 yards per game).

Troy’s Jadarius Garner was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week with seven total tackles, three tackles for loss and two sacks in their 66-3 win over Savannah State.

The Jags will host Western Kentucky at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Saturday with a 6:30pm kickoff.
